What families are experiencing today is not an ordinary economic decline that is soon to reverse itself. According to the US Census Bureau, another 2.6 million people slipped into poverty in the United States last year, and the number of Americans living below the official poverty line, 46.2 million people, was the highest number in the 52 years the bureau has been publishing figures on it.
According to the 2011 US Census, Lake County has a population of 706,222 and 57,910 are below the poverty level.
Here’s what we’re facing in Lake County. These past years, post-recession, have seen no gains for struggling families. Poverty, unemployment, and rates of uninsurance are at the same levels or worse than they were during the recession, and incomes have dropped even further.
You can play a positive role to help to raise awareness about the real-life situation faced by many of your neighbors, who are fighting to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. This community-wide event started five years ago with a few concerned people, who sought to make the community aware of the rising poverty rate in Lake County. It now has grown far beyond our expectations and we know a very large group of people will participate in the May 2nd Anti-Poverty I Why I Walk/Run 2015. It is an important community event that makes the average person a little more analytical about how fortunate some people are to have the basic necessities of life that we often take for granted. We can make a difference. Just one person or one dollar can make a difference. With community people getting together, we can motivate individual and collective action to fight poverty. We are simply trying to highlight a serious problem that we can’t ignore because it involves the safety and welfare of our neighbors.
The ability to speak out and take action to fight poverty are the reasons you need to join Community Action Partnership of Lake County, as our friends, neighbors, social service partners, civic leaders and faith-based leaders participate in the Annual Anti-Poverty Walk/Run.
We are happy to annouce that this years walking / running course has been extented an additional 11/2 miles. Click on the map below to view course.
